Golf Costa Rica: Hacienda Pinilla Resort 


Hacienda Pinilla is Costa Rica’s little secret golf gem. It really doesn’t get the publicity that Four Seasons, Marriott Los Suenos or Reserva Conchal get but believe me, it is a great golf course. Located near the town of Tamarindo and inside the Hacienda Pinilla resort, this golf course offers wide fairways, long par 4s and probably Costa Rica’s most famous par 3 – the 15th.

The Pinilla resort is home to the JW Marriott Guanacaste and to La Posada hotel – both are great options for stay depending on your budget. I would recommend staying at La Posada but spending the day at the JW Marriott or at the Pinilla beach club. La Posada’s rooms are styled like Spanish haciendas and the food at the pool side restaurant is top notch.

I like Hacienda Pinilla because you can play at your own pace. I have never had anyone shooting their drives over my head or having to wait for a slow group. A round at Pinilla is very relaxing and you can truly enjoy the scenery – Guanacaste’s dry rainforest.


One of the favorite holes is the par 4 ninth hole. You have to decide between layup or trying to shoot over the fairway bunkers. If you lay up, you will have a very long iron shot to the elevated green that is protected by bunkers and a severe slope that helps the ball roll towards the OB. I like this hole because even though it looks easy, all of a sudden you are putting for a double bogey.


My idea of a perfect vacation at Hacienda Pinilla is having breakfast at La Posada, playing a round of golf and then going to the awesome beach club to hang out by the pool. Enjoy the sunset at the Avellanas beach where the beach club is located. Once the sun goes down, go to Tamarindo for drinks and dinner. Repeat if necessary.
