Golf Costa Rica: Valle del Sol 

Valle del Sol is located in the Santa Ana area of San Jose. Located conveniently close to large office parks like Forum and hotels like the Marriott Costa Rica, Intercontinental, Residence Inn Costa Rica and Indigo, this course was first completely public course in the San Jose area.

The way it is set up Valle del Sol is a great option for weekend duffers and for the low handicapper. Most holes have a difference of 60 yards between the white tees and black tees and in the case of the 18th hole, the white tees par 5 is 498 yards and black tees measures 600+ yards.

Valle del Sol has weekly social tournaments and is the official home base for the Central Valley Association (CVGA) – which has tournaments every Tuesday. These tournaments are a lot of fun and will make the average gringo feel at home since most CVGA members are ex-pats and retired Americans. I highly recommend joining the Valle del Sol league.

My favorite hole is the par 5 18th hole. You can play it tame by teeing off the white tees or if you are feeling macho play it from the black tees. The black tees require that you hit a 200 yard drive over a water hazard, guarding against the out of bounds on the left and lateral hazard at the landing area of your drive. Your second shot is a full fairway wood in order to have a manageable approach shot to the green. There is water all the way to the green and the fairway tilts towards the water.

My least favorite hole? Definitely the 200+ yard par 3 15th hole. This par 3 normally plays against the wind and requires a low iron to get to it. Just to make things a bit tougher, you have to hit over extreme rough for about 100 yards and there is extreme rough on the left of the green. Course Gallery
